Day 1: Delhi

Arrive in Delhi

Upon your arrival into Delhi, India’s tumultuous and history-dense capital city, you will be greeted at the airport by a local representative and transferred to your hotel in a comfortable private vehicle.

A city of contrasts, Delhi’s bustling streets are home to ancient Mughal-era architecture and modern skyscrapers. Rich in history, the city has served as capital of various empires throughout the centuries and is now a melting pot of cultures where people from across India flock in search of opportunity.

Embarkation

Following breakfast at your hotel, you’ll check out in the afternoon and transfer to Delhi’s Safdarjung Railway Station to board the Palace on Wheels luxury train.

You’ll receive a traditional welcome as you board at approximately 16:30, and the train will depart Delhi for its eight-day odyssey through India at 18:30, cutting through the scenic landscapes of Northern India as it travels towards Jaipur, the capital of the state of Rajasthan.

A sumptuous dinner will be served on board as you settle into the train’s opulent interior.

Day 2: Delhi

Pink City Tour

Indulge in a delicious breakfast on board the Palace on Wheels as it rumbles into the city of Jaipur.

After a grand welcome into this royal heritage city, you’ll depart by coach to discover the treasure trove of artefacts at the Albert Hall Museum followed by a host of architectural marvels including the Hawa Mahal, Jantar Mantar observatory and the City Palace.

You’ll sit down for an authentic lunch at the beautiful Raj Palace before exploring the grandeur of Amer Fort, which looms over the city from the Aravalli Hills. In the mid-afternoon, you can immerse yourself in the bustling local markets to browse traditional Jaipuri crafts and other local delicacies, bartering with vendors and mingling with the locals.

You’ll return to the Palace on Wheels in the evening for dinner as the train resumes its journey and heads towards the city of Sawai Madhopur, located on the edge of the thriving wilderness of Ranthambore National Park, where Royal Bengal tigers roam.

Day 3: Jaipur

Day 4: Ranthambore National Park & Chittogarh

Game Drive in Ranthambore National Park, Discover Chittogarh’s Rajput Heritage

Early in the morning, you’ll disembark the train for a thrilling safari game drive through the rich wilderness of Ranthambore National Park, during which you might glimpse the iconic Royal Bengal tiger in its natural habitat along with a host of other exciting wildlife including leopards, sloth bears, Sambar deer and more than 270 species of birdlife.

Following your enthralling safari experience, you’ll reboard the train and enjoy a restorative breakfast, with the Palace on Wheels resuming its journey at around 10:20 as it trundles towards Chittogarh.

As the train edges through the picturesque scenery of Rajasthan, you’ll have some time to spend at leisure – an excellent opportunity to make the most of the onboard bar. The train will arrive into Chittogarh at approximately 15:00, and you’ll disembark to explore the ancient forts and castles which lie steeped in the grandeur of the Rajput clan. Revelling in the various heritage sites throughout the city, you’ll enjoy high tea within a fortress followed by a thrilling light-and-sound programme, reboarding the Palace on Wheels in the evening for dinner.

Day 4: Ranthambore National Park & Chittogarh

Day 5: Udaipur

Explore the City of Lakes

After a delectable breakfast on board, you’ll be taken for a tour around Udaipur’s historical garden, Saheliyon Ki Bari, which is replete with lotus pools and stunning marble-carved elephants.

Afterwards, you’ll head to the City Palace and Crystal Gallery, which provide an insight into Udaipur’s cultural significance. You’ll then sit down for a sumptuous lunch at the Taj Fateh Prakash Palace, a stunning heritage hotel, following which you’ll embark on a scenic boat ride to the resplendent Jagmandir Island Palace for high tea.

Following your ritzy high tea experience, you’ll return to the train, which will continue its journey at around 16:00 as it heads towards the northwestern frontier of Jaisalmer, once a medieval trading hub.

Day 5: Udaipur

Explore Jaisalmer

Tucked deep in the heart of the Thar Desert, Jaisalmer is the final princely bastion of Rajasthan. The Palace on Wheels will stop at this historic trading settlement at around 09:00 and you’ll disembark to enjoy a sightseeing tour of Gadsasir Sagar Lake plus the impressive forts and numerous havelis. Jaisalmer Fort was built in the year 1156, making it one of Rajasthan’s oldest fortresses. It is also one of the planet’s few ‘living forts’ since some 25% of Jaisalmer’s old city’s population still reside within its protective walls.

You’ll return to the train to enjoy lunch on board before disembarking for a camel ride and tea on the sand dunes, before the Palace on Wheels continues its journey and heads towards the city of Jodhpur.

Day 6: Jaisalmer

Day 7: Jodhpur

Jodhpur City Tour

The train will pull into the Blue City of Jodhpur at approximately 07:00 and breakfast will be served at 07:30.

Afterwards, you’ll disembark for a revealing city tour of Jodhpur’s cultural and architectural marvels, including the imposing majesty of Mehrangarh Fort and the nearby marble-clad cenotaph of Jaswant Thada. You can also get a glimpse of Jodhpur’s rich history at the Umaid Bhavan Museum, capping off the morning with some shopping at the buzzing local markets for a slice of authentic local life.

A grand lunch will be served at Ajit Bhawan, an elegant luxury heritage hotel, and afterwards you’ll return to the train as it sets off towards Bharatpur in the afternoon.

Day 7: Jodhpur

Keoladeo National Park, Agra Fort, Taj Mahal

The train will stop in the early hours of the morning and you’ll enjoy a visit to Keoladeo National Park, once a duck hunting reserve of the Maharajas that is renowned for its extraordinary diversity of native, resident and migratory birdlife, with some 400 species having been spotted here.

After visiting this UNESCO World Heritage Site, you’ll return to the train to enjoy breakfast on board as it departs for Agra, a city steeped in the grandeur of the once-formidable Mughal Empire. Arriving into Agra at approximately 09:00, you’ll disembark to visit Agra Fort, once a place of residence for India’s powerful Mughal rulers. Then at 15:00, you’ll visit what is arguably India’s most iconic cultural site: the Taj Mahal. Gleaming beneath the sun with its dazzling white-marble façade, seeing this architectural masterpiece with its stunning inlay work and impressive dome is an experience that is nothing short of breathtaking.

You’ll then sit down for an exquisite lunch at the Trident Hotel before exploring some of the local markets. In the evening, you’ll return to the train as it resumes its journey towards Delhi at around 20:45.

Day 8: Bharatpur & Agra

Disembark

When you wake, the train will have arrived in Delhi’s Safdarjung Railway Station and you’ll indulge in your final breakfast on board before disembarking at 07:30.

You will be greeted at the station by a local representative and transferred to your hotel.
